Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting. It promotes the principle that a person using leverage and proper technique can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant using joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat an opponent. BJJ can be trained for self defense, sport grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi) and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition.
BJJ is a highly effective, comprehensive system of standing and ground defense techniques utilizing rules of leverage. Thousands of civilians, martial artists and law enforcement officers consistently use BJJ because of its simple, effective responses. During each BJJ class you will also learn proven self defense techniques which will give you greater self confidence.
Many people do not realize that training BJJ is a great way to lose weight and get into shape. Simply training two days a week can help you burn fat and significantly improve your cardiovascular conditioning as well as your coordination and muscle strength. BJJ is one of the best overall workouts one can do. In addition, training improves balance, coordination, cardio vascular capacity, and muscular endurance.
This doesn't mean you need to be big or strong to learn BJJ. It teaches individuals despite strength or size to utilize principles of leverage that will assist them in defending against or defeating a larger opponent. In addition, BJJ's techniques were refined and modernized by Master Helio Gracie who weighed no more than 145 lbs. In fact, stronger people generally have the hardest time learning BJJ because it's philosophy is far more technically oriented with less emphasis on muscle and brute force as foundational aspects of the art. And the results for focusing on technique is the feeling of grappling "water." This is Jiu Jitsu at it's highest level.
Don't worry if you've never done Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or any martial art before. We encourage people from all cultures and backgrounds to experience Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. BJJ has already been taught and embraced by many people from many different nationalities around the globe. Jiu Jitsu has people of all physical abilities and sizes who love learning this extremely effective martial art. In addition, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is one of the fastest growing martial arts in the world.
